The term "windhover" is a name for the kestrel, a small falcon. The name is derived from the bird's habit of hovering or hanging in the air with its head to the wind. It has been said that Gerard Manley Hopkins regarded "The Windhover" as his best poem. Because it was later dedicated to Christ, many critics argue that the windhover is a symbol of Christ.
