Red Gully Composed by George Sweet. For String Orchestra. Published by Carl Fischer, Llc. (Catalog # YAS119, UPC: 798408091408)

If you think about it, film scores could be considered today's "classical" music.  Several writers have developing a real flair for composing pieces that sound as if they could be movie music - but they are actually solid teaching pieces that make great concert numbers.  George Sweet is one of those writers that has the knack and The Red Gully is a great example of the genre.  A programmatic description of a place from his childhood, you can almost see yourself coming upon the gully in the woods and enjoying the adventures that ensue as the melody tumbles over a jauntily syncopated accompaniment.  The two sharps in the key signature are often naturalized as the harmonic structure rolls from A to G to F, sounding very modern, but tonal.  Toward the end, some bell tones in a mixed meter section crank up the intensity and it ends big in A minor.  And it all sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a non-existent movie.
