Advancing bands looking for a programmatic challenge will LOVE this piece! Depicting the excitement of the legendary WWI dog-fighter, The Red Baron is asfun to listen to as it is to play. A dramatic intro. (featuring a trumpet solo) eventually gives way to a driving A-section (take-off/flight) before engaging in dog-fight combat (well-represented by trombone smears). Although in 4/4 with mostly basic 8th note rhythms, the layered writing and quick tempomake the piece seem more difficult than it is. A wonderful selection and programming contrast!
