Written in the charcter of spy themes from the 1960's, Midnight Escape depictsthe excitement of a chase. The tension is heightened by the driving rhythms and syncopations in 5/4 (written in alternating 3/4 and 2/4 measures). The chase subsides for a moment as a temporary hiding place is found (slurred dotted half-notes over straight 3/4 time), but the chase resumes to close the piece. This is a great opportunity to teach odd/mixed meter and work on dotted quarter-note syncopation. An exciting and fine teaching piece for advancing junior high bands!
