Many lumberjack songs have been passed down over the years. This one, from Newfoundland, is also known as "The Shanty Boy's Song." In a flowing 6/8, it will submerse your students in characteristic hooked bowing. The tune is in a somewhat exotic Dorian mode - e natural minor with a raised 6th scale degree of C#, which gives rhythmic emphasis when it appears. Since the tunes of Newfoundland were highly influenced by Irish and Scottish music traditions, students may recognize motifs from the Irish fiddle tune "Swallowtail Jig" here and there. New Ohio MEA M.S. Class A String Orchestra for 2013.
