The first of Sousa's marches to achieve great popularity, audiences of his dayfound it a refreshing change from its European counterparts. It traipses along at a more relaxed pace than his later successes, and is charmingly more stylistic, decorated with subtle woodwind flourishes, and quiet, lyrical countermelodies. Less bombast (and no stinger!), but unmistakably Sousa. (2:58)
