An epigraph written for the original publication proclaimed, "At the lively Mardi Gras soon a large feast will overflow." The music sets the stage with Tchaikovsky's signature chromaticism while Brook's inspired arrangement provides moments for each section to shine, allowing for a maturation process of the players with the accompaniment figures.
